Family homes

May 2023 - ongoing

Family Homes is the first in a trilogy of publications and marks a pivotal exploration of community, identity, and authorship. In this work, Duong Thuy Nguyen reconfigures her MA thesis through Dadaist techniques, transforming a traditional academic text into a set of instructions for the “audienceless.” This gesture of dismantling and reassembling reorients the relationship between text, maker, and reader—emphasising disruption, play, and the redefinition of knowledge production.

At its core, Family Homes is anchored in the domestic and the communal, drawing from living archives, the intimate rhythms of everyday life, and Nguyen’s own personal narrative. The work becomes a vessel through which the seemingly mundane is elevated into a critical site of reflection—where memory, place, and familial experience intersect.

Materially, the work situates industrial elements such as aluminium in dialogue with the fragility of rice paper. This material juxtaposition functions as an intersectional lens, examining how structures of identity—social, cultural, and political—converge to shape lived experience. Through these choices, Nguyen crafts a space where the personal becomes political, and the aesthetic becomes a mode of inquiry. The result is a quiet yet insistent call to consider how we belong, how we are seen, and how we might reimagine the frameworks through which we are represented.
